Reasons Canadian Citizenship Applications Can Be Refused
Even qualified applicants can face refusal if their submissions fail to meet the requirements of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. We take our role as Canadian immigration consultants seriously, helping you avoid common pitfalls and protecting your investment.
Top reasons for refusal can include the following:
Incomplete documentation: Missing forms, signatures, or supporting evidence can lead to automatic rejection. IRCC requires you to complete all paperwork and ensure its consistency before reviewing your eligibility.
Failure to meet residency criteria: Applicants must prove they were physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the 5 years before applying. Insufficient records or calculation errors often trigger denials.
Language proficiency issues: Adults aged 18-54 must demonstrate proficiency in English or French. Submitting outdated or invalid test results can cause problems with citizenship applications.
Citizenship test failure: This test measures your knowledge of Canada’s history, values, and laws. Failing to prepare or retake the test after an initial failure may lead to refusal.
Criminal inadmissibility: A criminal record, ongoing charges, or certain convictions inside or outside Canada can make applicants ineligible for citizenship.
Security concerns: The IRCC may refuse citizenship for individuals considered a risk to Canada’s security or national interests.
Outstanding debts to the Canadian government: Unpaid taxes, immigration loans, or other government debts can block approval until you resolve them.
We understand the stress of application denial, especially when you meet most of the qualifications. That’s why we take a proactive approach, reviewing every detail, addressing potential issues early, and ensuring your Canadian citizenship application reflects your full eligibility. If your application has already been denied, we can assess the refusal letter, identify the reasons for refusal, and help you with the next steps.
