You can only sponsor an individual family member or a relative to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and are a
♦ Citizen of Canada, or
♦ Permanent resident of Canada
♦ Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian-Indian Act
if you meet this criteria, you can sponsor your close family member to Canada.
Who can you sponsor?
Generally, the Canadian government allows you to sponsor only close family members like spouse, parents, grandparents, children, adopted children, brothers, sisters, uncle & aunt (in particular situations). In addition to that, the family member you’re sponsoring must be in a position to provide financial support to other family members.
You can also sponsor orphaned grandchild, brother, sister, nephew, or niece if:
♦ You have blood relation or relation by adoption with that family member, and
♦ Both the mother and father of the family members have died, and
♦ They are aged under 18 years, and
♦ They are unmarried or in a conjugal relationship,
If a particular family member meets all the requirements mentioned above, you will be free to sponsor them to live in Canada.
Also, you cannot sponsor them if they fall in any of the criteria mentioned below:
♦ One of their parents is alive
♦ No one knows the whereabouts of their parents
♦ They have a guardian or caretaker while their parents are still alive
♦ They have been abandoned by their parents
♦ Their parents are detained or are in jail for whatever reason
You can also sponsor one relative (related by birth or adoption), of any age, if you meet the requirements mentioned below:
♦ You don’t have any other living relatives such as spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, orphaned niece or nephew; you could sponsor.
♦ You don’t have any other relatives in Canada who are:
♦♦ Canadian Citizens
♦♦ Permanent Canadian Citizens
♦♦ Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian-Indian Act
Who can you not sponsor?
You cannot sponsor someone who is not allowed to come to Canada or not
admissible in Canada for specific reasons.
