A study permit in Canada is a kind of document that is assigned to the students/candidates of other countries to allow them to study at designated learning institutions in Canada. If you are a foreign nationalist and want to study in any university in Canada, you need a study permit. Some people confuse study permit with study visa. Please note that study permit is not a Visa. You need a separate visitor’s visa or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter in Canada.
You have to apply for the study permit from outside of Canada. In some cases, people can also apply from within the nation and in some cases, you may apply at the port upon entry.
Documents Needed To Apply For Canada’s Study Permit
You’ll need the below-mentioned documents to apply for the study permit:
♦ Acceptance letter from DLI
♦ Proof of identity
♦ Proof of financial support
Proof of Acceptance
You must have an acceptance letter from your school and university in Canada. It can be an original or electronic copy along with your study permit. If you are partially/conditionally accepted (which means you might need to take some prerequisite courses), you will only be granted a study permit for the period of those courses plus 1 year.
Proof of Identity
♦ You need to provide:
♦ A valid passport or travel document
♦ Two recent passport-size photographs with the original date of birth written on the back of photos
Proof of Financial Support
You need to submit proofs to show that you can support yourself and accompanying family members financially. Here are some proofs you can give:
♦ A Canadian bank account on your name
♦ Proof of student loan issued on your name
♦ Past 4 months bank statements
♦ Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian financial institution
♦ A bank draft that can be converted to Canadian currency
♦ Proof that you paid expenses for your tuition and housing fee
♦ Proof of scholarship that you received from Canadian Educational Programs
How long can you stay in Canada with study permit?
A study permit is usually valid until the completion of your study program plus 90 more days. You get the 90 extended days to either prepare leaving Canada or applying to extend your stay.
Here are few exceptions:
♦ If you’re not completely accepted by DLI and are required to take some prerequisite courses to be accepted into the main program, your permit will be valid for those courses as well, plus you get 1 year to qualify for the main program.
♦ If you don’t complete your course in the required time period, you must apply for the extended stay or you’ll need to leave Canada upon expiration.
♦ In case you finish your studies earlier than the required time, your permit will stop being valid 90 days after the completion of the course.
