Parent and Grandparents Program (PGP) in Canada
The Canada’s Family Class Immigration Scheme facilitates the citizens and permanent residents of Canada to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come and live in Canada as citizens. This is facilitated through Parents and Grandparents Program.
The parents and grandparents who are successfully sponsored to Canada automatically become permanent residents of Canada and get all the benefits that come along. That means they can live in Canada and work in any desired location in the country without any restrictions. In addition to that, they will also get access to free healthcare and services available to permanent residents. Ultimately, they receive the citizenship of Canada.
Under the current multi-year immigration plan of Canadian Government, annually 21,000 (Number may change every year) new permanent residents are admissible as permanent residents in Canada under the Parents & Grandparents Program. There is no first-come-first-serve rule anymore; the cases are being processed randomly.
Eligibility Criteria for Parent & Grandparent Program
In order to be eligible for the sponsorship, both the person offering sponsorship and the person receiving sponsorship must fulfil some eligibility criteria.
The sponsor must be
♦ Citizen of Canada, or
♦ Permanent Resident of Canada, or
♦ Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian-Indian Act
Additionally, the sponsor must:
♦ Fulfil certain income requirements (which has been decreased considering ongoing pandemic)
♦ Be able to financially support the person being sponsored and their dependents.
|Income required for Sponsorship (Applying in 2021):|
|Size of Family Unit||Minimum necessary income|
|More than 7 persons, for each additional person, add||$7,121|
Both the sponsor and the person being sponsored must also sign an agreement stating:
- The sponsor must provide financial support for the person being sponsored and their dependents for three to twenty years depending on their age and relationship with the sponsor. This condition begins on the very first day the sponsored person become the resident of Canada.
- Also, the sponsored person must pledge to make every effort they can to support themselves in the country.
In case the sponsors are not allowed or invited or are unwilling to sponsor their parents or grandparents to Canada under PGP, they have another option as well. There is a super-visa program regulated by IRCC which allows the parents and grandparents of Canadian Citizens extend their visits to Canada. With this Visa, the person being sponsored can stay in Canada for up to 2 years after the initial entry. This visa has the validity of 10 years which means the visa holders can return to Canada as long as their visa has the validity. More details about Super Visa….
Please note that the super visa doesn’t give the visa holders the permanent residency status in Canada.
