Your work permit allows you to legally work in the Canada as a live-in caregiver, temporary worker or International Experience Canada worker. A work permit is generally a document that comes with an expiry date and before this date, you may wish to renew or extend your work permit if you want to remain and stay employed in Canada.
If your Canadian Work Permit is about to expire and you want to extend your stay in Canada for a while with the same privileges, you need to apply for the work permit extension 30 days before the current expiry date on your work permit document. What you need to apply for the extension of your work permit will also depend on what kind of job you do.
At the same time, you must ensure that your passport is not expiring around the same time as your work permit because you can’t extend your work visa beyond the expiration date of your passport.
How You Extend Your Work Permit in Canada?
Extending Your Work Permit as a Live-in Caregiver
If you have a work permit as a part of Live-in Caregiver Program, you can submit the application for extension while residing in Canada. You can apply online or offline to extend the date of your work permit or change the terms of your employment, whatever your requirements are. The terms of employment are only changed if you’re going to work for a different employer or work on a different location from the one already mentioned on your permit.
We suggest you to apply for your new work permit under the LCP at least 30 days before your current permit expires. If you do so, you can continue to stay in Canada with the same privileges as mentioned on your current permit until your extension application gets approved.
Extending Your Experience Canada Work Permit
Canada Experience Work Permit can only be extended under some exceptional circumstances. For example, if your original employment was for less time than you are actually eligible for and your employer offers you to extend your employment, you can apply to extend your permit by filling IMM 5710E form application to extend your stay or remain in Canada as a worker. In case you get fired by the current employer and they are unable to pay you wages, or you face other serious issues with your current employer, the Canadian officials may let you change your employer.
Extending Your Work Permit as a Temporary Worker
In case you’re working temporarily in Canada and need to extend your permit, you can apply to extend your stay in Canada within 30 days or more before your current permit expiry date. You can apply either online or through a paper application.
To apply for the extension as a temporary worker, you need to show the officials that how your employment have changed and why you must be given extension. If you have been offered a new job or got a new employer in Canada, you must re-apply for a whole new work permit. In that case, you can’t start a job until you have been granted a new permit.
