The Canadian province of New Brunswick has launched a new immigration program called the New Brunswick Critical Worker Pilot, which aims to attract skilled workers for in-demand jobs. Six reputable employers in the region will offer training and support to newcomers as part of the program, which is a collaboration between the federal and provincial governments.

The participating employers have a good track record with the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NB PNP), have previously hired immigrants, and have established settlement programs in place. They will also provide on-the-job training and language support to newcomers.

• Groupe Westco
• Imperial Manufacturing
• J.D. Irving Ltd
• McCain Foods.

The five-year program will be closely monitored and evaluated to ensure it meets the needs of the province and produces the best possible outcomes. Prioritisation will be given to applications from technology and health-related occupations, international graduates in the province, and those from certain National Occupational Classification codes. The program aims to support both newcomers and employers by providing guaranteed jobs and settlement services such as language training and housing.

Employer Requirements

All the participating employers must have:

• Robust plans for housing and transportation to ensure the successful establishment of candidates in new jobs and communities, with a focus on long-term retention
• Comprehensive human resources planning for recruiting and hiring skilled international talent and for on-the-job skills development
• Up to 200 hours of language training, as needed, for candidates
• Guidance and support for candidates interested in pursuing Canadian secondary education equivalency

Prioritizing Applications

To address its backlog, the province of New Brunswick is prioritizing the processing of immigration applications from individuals in technology and health-related occupations, as well as international graduates in the province. Specifically, the province focuses on applications from individuals with certain National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes, francophones, and graduates of New Brunswick institutions. In September, the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program announced that these measures would be in place until the end of 2022.
